Weather: How about some good news...

From Sebastopol's Police Chief Ron Nelson:

We have some good news from the field.  The rain has slowed tremendously.  The Community Center and Park Village should be out of any danger.  The parking lot to the rear of the Community Center is clear of standing water and the building is completely safe.  Captain Hickey and Assistant Chief Thibideaux met with several of the residents at Park Village and they are all confident they are safe and not in any danger, and the Captains agree.  The only standing water is on Morris Street near Laguna Park Way on the Laguna side where it spilled over.  The water has ceased to notably rise at this point. Morris Street will remain closed from Laguna Park Way north until further notice.

Here is what we anticipate over the next 10-12 hours:
  • The weather report shows some continuing showers off and on throughout the afternoon into the evening hours.  The rain should taper off and stop into the overnight hours.
  • The Russian River is forecasted to reach minor flood stage early Saturday morning just after midnight.
  • Flood warning in effect until further notice for the Russian River near Guerneville.
  • The river is expected to rise just above flood stage this evening and crest at 34.2 feet late tonight.
  • The Flood Watch will remain in effect for the rest of Sonoma County to include Sebastopol through Saturday at 10 AM.
  • Forecast models at the flood gauges are showing that the Russian River has nearly peaked and will begin subsiding overnight.
  • This will allow for drainage and with some luck a drawdown on the Laguna levels overnight.
There has been some minor flooding in other parts of the county, particularly on roadways.

With some luck, the Laguna won't rise much more, and the situation likely has about peaked.  Water levels may continue to rise slowly for a time as runoff and the lighter rain continues.  We are continuing to monitor and will do so overnight.  Unless something drastic happens, there may not be another update until morning but rest assured if there is something that all need to be made aware of, we'll get it out to you.
